How to play Gin Rummy in five steps

  1. Deal. Each player gets 10 cards. One card is turned face up beside the draw pile.
  2. Draw. On your turn, take the top card of the draw pile or the face-up card.
  3. Discard. Then discard one card. You may not discard the card you just took from the face-up pile.
  4. Make melds. A set is three or four cards of the same rank. A run is three or more cards in a row in the same suit (Ace is low). The table groups your melds for you and counts your deadwood.
  5. Knock or go gin. When your unmatched cards (deadwood) are worth 10 or less, you can knock. With no deadwood at all you go gin. The hand is then scored.

Scoring

Aces count 1, number cards face value and Jack, Queen and King 10. If you knock, your opponent lays off any cards that fit your melds and then the difference in deadwood is your score. Go gin and you score 25 plus their deadwood. If the opponent ends with equal or less deadwood than you, it is an undercut and they score 25 plus the difference. First to the target score wins.

Questions

Is Gin Rummy the same as Rummy?

They are cousins. Gin Rummy is a two-player game where you can end the hand by knocking, while Rummy and Indian Rummy are usually played by more players and end when someone declares a complete hand.

What is deadwood?

Deadwood is the total value of the cards in your hand that are not part of a set or run. You can knock when it is 10 or less.

What is an undercut?

If you knock and your opponent, after laying off cards on your melds, has the same or less deadwood than you, they win the hand and score a 25 point bonus plus the difference.

Can the Ace be high?

Not in Gin Rummy. The Ace is always low, so A-2-3 is a run but Q-K-A is not.
