Hearts is the card game where you try to lose tricks. Every heart you take costs 1 point and the Queen of Spades costs 13, so you spend the whole hand ducking under other players' cards. Millions learned it from the Hearts game in Windows; here it runs in any browser, free, against three computer players.
How to play Hearts in five steps
- Get 13 cards. Four players, no partners, no trump suit.
- Pass three cards. Before each hand, pass three cards: to the left, then to the right, then across, then no pass, and repeat. Pass your dangerous cards: the Q♠, A♠, K♠ and high hearts.
- 2♣ starts. Whoever has the 2 of clubs leads it. No points may be played on the first trick.
- Follow suit, dodge points. Follow suit if you can; if you can't, throw away your worst card. Hearts can't be led until one has been played.
- Count your points. Each heart is 1, the Q♠ is 13. Take all 26 and you shoot the moon: everyone else gets 26 instead. When someone reaches 100, the lowest score wins.

Usually the Queen, King and Ace of spades (unless you have several low spades to protect them), high hearts, and cards that empty a short suit, so you can throw away bad cards later.
