Play Ludo online free

Ludo is the dice-and-token race that nearly every family in India has played. Roll the dice, bring your four tokens out of the yard, send your rivals back home and be the first to get all four to the centre. This free version plays against the computer with 2, 3 or 4 players. No real money, no download.

How to play Ludo in five steps

  1. You are Red. Each player has four tokens in their coloured yard.
  2. Roll a 6 to start. You need a 6 to bring a token onto your start square. A 6 also gives you another roll (three in a row lose the turn).
  3. Race round the board. Move one token by the number rolled, clockwise, then up your own coloured home column.
  4. Capture. Land on a single opponent token to send it back to its yard, unless it stands on a safe square (the coloured start squares and the ★ squares). A capture gives you another roll.
  5. Exact roll to finish. You must roll the exact number to reach the centre. The first player with all four tokens home wins.

Tips

Keep a token on a safe square when an opponent is within six squares behind it. Capturing a token that has gone far round the board hurts the most. Do not rush all four tokens out: it is often better to advance one token and keep the others as flexible choices for later rolls.

Questions

Do I need a 6 to start in Ludo?

Yes. In the standard rules you need to roll a 6 to bring a token out of the yard. Cheettukali gives you another roll after every 6.

What happens when I land on an opponent?

Their token goes back to its yard, unless it is standing on a safe square. You also get another roll if the capture bonus is on.

Do I need an exact roll to get home?

Yes. A token can only enter the centre with the exact number. A bigger roll means you must move a different token.

Is Ludo the same as Pachisi?

Ludo is a simplified version of Pachisi, the ancient Indian board game. Ludo was published in England in the 1890s.
