Spades is the great American partnership card game: four players in two teams, spades always trump, and every hand starts with a bid. You and your partner must win at least as many tricks as you bid together, without taking too many extras ("bags"). Here you can play Spades free in your browser, with a computer partner sitting opposite you.
How to play Spades in five steps
- Get 13 cards. You and Priya (top) play against Rahul and Arjun. Spades (♠) are always trump.
- Bid. Each player bids how many tricks they expect to win. Your team's target is your bid plus your partner's. Bid Nil if you think you can win no tricks at all.
- Follow suit. If you can't, you may trump with a spade or throw any card.
- Break spades. Spades can't be led until a spade has been played on another suit (or you have nothing else).
- Score. Made it: 10 × bid, +1 per extra trick. Failed: −10 × bid. Nil: +100 or −100. Every 10 extra tricks (bags) cost 100. First team to 500 wins.

What are bags in Spades?
Tricks your team wins beyond its bid. Each is worth 1 point, but every time your team collects 10 bags you lose 100 points, so overbidding and underbidding are both risky.
What does Nil mean?
A bid of zero: you promise to win no tricks at all. If you succeed your team gets +100; if you take even one trick, −100. Your partner's bid is scored separately.
When can spades be led?
Only after a spade has been played on another suit (spades are 'broken'), or when you have nothing but spades.
