Kazhutha (കഴുത, "donkey") is the card game every Malayali child learns first: at family gatherings, on holidays, in hostel rooms. Nobody wins Kazhutha; everyone tries not to lose. The last player left holding cards is the kazhutha, and the whole table makes sure they hear about it. Now you can play it free in your browser with 4, 5 or 6 players.
How to play Kazhutha in five steps
- Deal the whole pack. All 52 cards are shared out (13 each with 4 players, 8 or 9 each with 6).
- A♠ starts. Whoever holds the Ace of spades leads it. Play goes anticlockwise.
- Follow suit. If everyone follows the suit led, the round is thrown away and the highest card leads the next round.
- Cut (vettu). If you have no card of the suit led, play any card. The round stops at once, and the player with the highest card of the suit led picks up all the cards and leads next.
- Get out. Players who run out of cards are safe. The last one still holding cards is the Kazhutha and gets a letter: K, A, Z, H, U, T, H, A. Spell the whole word and you lose the match.

Is Kazhutha the same as Donkey?
Yes. Kazhutha (കഴുത) is Malayalam for donkey, and many families simply call the game Donkey. Similar games are played across India as Bhabhi or Getaway.
Who starts in Kazhutha?
The player holding the Ace of spades leads it to the first round.
What happens when someone cuts?
The round stops immediately. The player who played the highest card of the suit that was led picks up every card in that round and leads next.
