Call Break Tips: How to Call Right and Win More Rounds
In Call Break, the round is usually won or lost before the first card is played: at the call. Here's how to call accurately and then play to make it.

Calling: count your sure tricks
| Cards | Count as about |
|---|---|
| A♠, or K♠ with another spade | 1 trick each |
| Each spade beyond your third | 1 trick |
| Ace of another suit | 1 trick (less if you have 6+ of that suit) |
| King with 1–3 small cards of the suit | About ¾ of a trick |
| A void or singleton in a side suit (with spades to spare) | About ½ to 1 extra trick |
Add it up and round down. Missing your call costs the full call; an extra trick earns only 0.1. That's why careful players call 2 or 3 on most hands.
Playing to make your call
Cash sure winners early
An Ace of hearts is safest in the first round of hearts. Wait, and someone may be out of hearts and trump it.
Remember the must-beat rule
When following suit, players must go higher if they can. So if you lead a King and someone holds the Ace, it will come out. Lead small cards toward your high cards instead.
Make voids
Get rid of a short side suit early. Once you're out of it, every time it's led you can win with a small spade.
Count spades
There are 13. Keep track of how many have fallen; when yours are the only ones left, every one is a winner.
Reading the table
- A player who called 5 or more has strong spades. Be careful leading suits they may be void in.
- Once you've made your call, extra tricks matter little. Use your remaining cards to stop others from making theirs.
- Watch who couldn't follow suit. Cheettukali's computer players remember it, and so should you.
