28 Card Game Tips: Play Like a Kerala Regular
28 rewards patience in the bidding and memory in the play. Here is how regular players think about each stage. Practise them at the free 28 table.

1. The first bid is often a forced 14
The player on the dealer's right must open, and 14 is the usual opening whatever the hand. Don't read too much into a 14 from that seat. A bid from anyone else means real cards.
2. Honours over your partner needs a real hand
To bid over your own partner you need 20. Only do it when your hand is clearly stronger than what your partner's bid suggests, for example two Jacks of one suit, because Honours wins +2 but loses −3.
3. Plan for the second round
After all eight cards are dealt, anyone may raise to 24 or more with a new trump. If you are the bidder at a low number, remember a strong opponent can take the call away. If your full eight cards turn out huge, a raise to 24 or 25 (+3 / −4) can be worth the risk.
4. Hide the trump card wisely
Place a low card of your trump suit face down if you can, not the Jack. The face-down card can't be used until the trump is shown, so hiding the Jack wastes your best card for several rounds.
5. Lead your side suits first
Since you can't lead the hidden trump suit early, cash your side-suit Jacks and 9s first. Every round the opponents don't know the trump is a round they may throw points away.
6. Defenders: throw a suit to cut it later
Getting rid of a short suit early lets you cut (vettu) it with a trump once the trump is shown. It is the defenders' best way to break a bid.
7. Count points, not rounds
Keep a running count of the points each side has taken. Once the bidders can no longer reach their number, the defenders can relax; until then, every 10 and Ace matters.
8. Double with points in hand
A double turns +2 / −3 into +4 / −6. Double when you hold Jacks the bidder can't catch, not because the bid looks high.
FAQ
What is a good bid in 28?
With one Jack and a few cards of a suit, 15 to 17 is normal. Two Jacks in one suit can support 18 to 20. Remember your partner's cards add points too.
Should I hide the Jack as the trump card in 28?
Usually not. The face-down card is locked until the trump is shown, so hide a low trump and keep the Jack in hand.
