The name 28 comes from the points in the pack. Once you know which cards carry points and how they rank, the rest of the game is easier to follow.

The pack

28 uses 32 cards: 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K and A in all four suits.

Card points

CardPoints
Jack3
Nine2
Ace1
Ten1
King, Queen, 8, 70

Each suit holds 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 7 points, and four suits make 28. That is where the name comes from.

Card ranking

The order is not the usual one. In every suit, from highest to lowest: J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7. The Jack beats everything and the 9 is second. The Ace is only third even though it is worth just 1 point.

Points are not the score

Card points are what the teams collect by winning tricks. The team that bid has to collect at least as many points as its bid (the lowest bid is 14). The game score is separate: on Cheettukali a bid up to 19 earns +1 if made and −2 if failed; a bid of 20 to 24 earns +2 or −3; 25 and above earns +3 or −4. Rules vary between groups, so agree on them before you play.
