FreeCell Strategy: How to Solve Almost Every Deal
Almost every FreeCell deal can be won. When you lose, it's usually because of a few early moves. Here's how to think like a strong FreeCell player.

1. Plan before your first move
All 52 cards are visible, so use that. Find the four Aces and the 2s. Which ones are buried deepest? Your first goal is to dig those out.
2. Free cells are a loan, not a gift
Each card in a free cell is a card that must come back out. With every cell full you can only make simple one-card moves, and the game usually ends. Use a cell only when it achieves something concrete: freeing an Ace, emptying a column, or making a longer run.
3. An empty column beats a free cell
An empty column can hold a whole run, and doubles the number of cards you can move at once. The formula is (free cells + 1) × 2empty columns:
| Free cells | Empty columns | Cards you can move |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 0 | 5 |
| 1 | 1 | 4 |
| 2 | 1 | 6 |
| 2 | 2 | 12 |
So try to empty a short column early, and think twice before filling one.
4. Build long, ordered runs
Long runs in alternating colours are easy to move later and keep the table tidy. Avoid putting a low card on top of cards you'll need soon.
5. Don't race to the foundations
Low cards should go up quickly, but a red 6 on its foundation can no longer hold a black 5 for you. Cheettukali's auto-move only sends cards that are safe to send.
6. Watch for traps
- Kings at the bottom of a column are good; Kings on top of low cards are trouble. Plan to move them into empty columns.
- If two cards of the same colour and rank are both buried, free the one that unlocks more.
7. Use undo and game numbers
Try the same numbered deal again with a different plan. FreeCell rewards that kind of practice more than any other solitaire.

FAQ
What is the best FreeCell strategy?
Plan before moving, free the Aces and low cards first, keep free cells empty as long as you can, and value empty columns highly because they let you move long runs.
Is an empty column better than a free cell?
Yes. An empty column holds a whole run and doubles how many cards you can move at once.
