If there is one rule that decides Indian Rummy games, it is this: no pure sequence, no win. It is also the biggest cause of 80-point losses for beginners.

What is a pure sequence?

A pure sequence is three or more cards of the same suit in order, with no joker of any kind. 5♣ 6♣ 7♣ is pure. So is 10♦ J♦ Q♦ K♦.

What is an impure sequence?

A sequence that includes a joker. For example 5♣ Joker 7♣ is an impure sequence, because the joker stands for the 6♣. It still counts as a sequence, but it cannot be your required "pure" one.

Tricky cases

Why the pure sequence matters so much

Without a pure sequence in the final hand, your whole hand counts as penalty points, up to the 80-point limit, even if the rest of your cards are well arranged. With one pure sequence, only your loose cards count. That is a difference of tens of points on one hand.

How to make one quickly

  1. Look at each suit separately. Find the suit where you hold cards close together.
  2. Prefer connected cards. 6-7-8 is better than 4-9-K. Cards one apart (6-8) also work if the middle card is still unseen.
  3. Pick up from the discard pile only when the card fits a sequence you are building. This is the one time it is worth showing the opponents your interest.
  4. Do not break a pure sequence to make a set, unless you already have another.
  5. Watch discards. If three 7♥ are already out, don't wait for 7♥.

What if you do not have one by mid-game?

Re-plan. Throw away your cards that cannot join a sequence and keep two connected cards from the same suit. If your hand is hopeless, a Drop (20 or 25 points early on) can be cheaper than playing on and losing 80.

The free Indian Rummy table labels each group as Pure seq, Sequence, Set or "not a meld", so you can see at once whether you have the pure sequence the show needs.

FAQ

Can a pure sequence have a joker?

No. If it includes any joker, printed or cut, it is an impure sequence.

Can I have two pure sequences?

Yes, and it is a strong hand because you are safe even if you lose one by mistake. You only need one to show.

Is A-2-3 a pure sequence?

Yes, if all three cards are of the same suit and none of them is a joker.

What if I never get a pure sequence?

You cannot show, and if another player shows first your whole hand counts against you up to 80 points. A drop early in the game is sometimes better.
