Making an empty column

Look for the column with the fewest cards, especially face-down ones. Move its cards onto other columns, even onto a different suit if needed, until it's empty.

What to put in it

Un-mixing suits

With 2 or 4 suits, columns become mixed: 9♠ 8♥ 7♥. With an empty column you can move the 8♥ 7♥ there, put a different 8 on the 9♠, and rebuild in suit. Experienced players do this constantly.

Before dealing

You can't deal while any column is empty. Before tapping the stock, fill each empty column with the card you need least, ideally a high card that won't block anything.
