The Pair Rule in 29: Royals and Marriage Explained

The Pair, also called Royals or (in Bangladesh) Marriage, is the King and Queen of the trump suit held by one player. It can swing a hand by 4 points, so knowing exactly when it counts is worth it.

What counts as a Pair

Only the King and Queen of trumps, in the same hand. A King and Queen of another suit is not a Pair, and a King with your partner and a Queen with you doesn't count either.

When can you declare it?

The common rule has two conditions:

  1. The trump must already be known (revealed).
  2. Your side must have won at least one round after the trump was revealed.

Once both are true, you show the King and Queen and the target changes.

What it does to the target

Who holds the PairEffectLimit
The bidding teamTarget goes down by 4Not below the minimum bid
The defending teamBidders' target goes up by 4Not above 28

Example: Your team bid 20. After the trump is shown and your partner wins a round, you declare the Pair. Your target is now 16. If the defenders had held it instead, your target would have become 24.

How Cheettukali handles it

On Cheettukali's 29 table the Pair is detected and declared for you once the conditions are met, so you never forget to claim it. The bid moves by 4, but never below 16 or above 28.
