Counting

  1. Count the Jacks. There are only four. Every time one falls, say it in your head.
  2. Count the Nines next. When a suit's Jack is gone, its Nine is the boss.
  3. Count trumps after the reveal. Eight cards in the trump suit. Track how many have been played.
  4. Count points, not rounds. Winning five rounds of zero-point cards is worth less than one round with a Jack and a Nine.

Bidding and trump

  1. Choose your longest suit as trump, not the one with the single biggest card.
  2. Hide a low trump face down, so your Jack stays in your hand where you can use it.
  3. As bidder, lead your side suits first. While the trump is hidden, opponents may throw away points.
  4. As defender, don't ask for the trump for nothing. If the round has no points, throw a low card instead.

Playing with your partner

  1. Feed your partner's winning round. If your partner's card will win, drop your Ten or Ace on it.
  2. Starve the opponents' winning round. If they're winning, play your 7 or 8.
  3. Lead back your partner's suit. If your partner opened with a suit, they probably like it.
  4. Throw a short suit early. Getting rid of a one-card suit lets you cut it with a trump later.

Reading the table

  1. A high bid means Jacks. Play around them; don't lead your Nine into a suit where the bidder probably holds the Jack.
  2. A player who asked for the trump is now void in the suit led. Remember it for later rounds.
  3. Double only with points you can see. Two outside Jacks are a reason to double; "the bid looks high" isn't.

Practise them one at a time

Trying all 15 at once is overwhelming. Pick two, play ten hands, then add two more. For the basics behind these tricks, read our 29 strategy tips.

One trick in action

Hearts are trump (revealed). You remember that J♠ and 9♠ have both fallen. You hold A♠. It is now the boss spade, so you lead it and collect your partner's 10♠: 2 points safe. Without counting, you'd have saved the Ace "for later" and lost it to a cut.
