Double and Redouble in 29
Doubling is how the defenders say "we don't believe you". It raises the stakes of a single hand, and it can turn a quiet game into a dramatic one.

The rule
- After the bidding ends and before the first card is played, the defending team may double.
- If they double, the bidding team may redouble.
- Some tables then allow a third step (a "set" or re-redouble); many don't.
Scoring effect
| Hand | Bidders win | Bidders lose |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | +1 | −1 |
| Doubled | +2 | −2 |
| Redoubled | +4 | −4 |
A redoubled hand can move the score by 4, more than half the way to ±6.
When should defenders double?
- When you can see the points: for example, you hold two Jacks outside the suit the bidder seems to like.
- When the bid is high and your partner bid earlier, showing strength.
- Not because you are behind in the game and want to gamble.
When should bidders redouble?
Only when you are confident. The doubling team has told you they have points, so a redouble needs a hand that wins even against good defence, for example a long trump suit headed by the Jack and Nine.
A table habit to avoid
Doubling every high bid "to scare them". Good bidders will simply redouble and punish it. Doubling is strongest when it's rare.
Quick decision table
| Situation | Double? |
|---|---|
| You hold two Jacks outside the bidder's suit | Yes |
| Bid is 22+ and your partner bid earlier | Often |
| You're at −5 and desperate | Only with real points |
| You hold one Ten and a hope | No |
Remember the asymmetry: a wrong double costs your side the same as it gains when right. Only double when the odds are clearly with you.
Doubling as a team
Usually one defender doubles. Before doubling, think about your partner's bids: if they bid earlier, your side has more strength than your hand alone shows.
