A Single hand is the boldest call in 29. You announce that you will win all eight rounds by yourself, without any trump, while your partner puts their cards down and watches.

How it works

Scoring

The common score is 3 game points, won or lost. That is half the distance to +6 or −6, so one Single hand can decide a game. Some parts of West Bengal score it as 6, and Lucknow variants score even more.

When is it safe?

You need cards that cannot lose a round, whatever the opponents hold. In practice that means:

Strong: J♠ 9♠ A♠ 10♠ J♥ 9♥ J♦ J♣ — every card wins in turn.
Risky: J♠ 9♠ A♠ K♠ J♥ 8♥ J♦ J♣ — the 8♥ will lose to any higher heart.

The order of play matters

Lead your long suit from the top first, so the opponents run out of that suit. Keep your single Jacks for last. Since there's no trump, nobody can cut you, so a top card is always safe when you lead it.

On Cheettukali

You are offered a Single hand when you hold five or more top cards. You can accept or decline. It scores ±3.

Single hand checklist

  1. Count your sure winners. Need eight.
  2. Check for a weak card in a short suit; one is enough to fail.
  3. Check the score: at +4 you may not need the risk; at −4 it could save the game.
  4. Plan your lead order before you announce.

When in doubt, bid normally instead. A comfortable 22 is worth +1 with far less risk.
