Hidden Trump Strategy in 29
The hidden trump is what gives 29 its tension. One player knows the trump; three don't. Using that information gap well wins hands.

For the bidder
- Hide a low trump. The face-down card can't be used until revealed. Keep the Jack and Nine in hand.
- Play side suits first. While opponents don't know the trump, they don't know which suits to protect.
- Watch who is void. When an opponent can't follow suit, they may ask. Plan for the moment trumps come alive.
- Don't reveal it yourself early unless you need to cut a big point round.
For the defenders
- Ask when it pays. Ask when the round holds a Ten, Ace, Nine or Jack and you hold a trump to cut with.
- Don't ask on empty rounds. Revealing the trump helps the bidder plan.
- Guess the trump from the bid. The bidder's strongest suit is usually trump. Avoid leading big cards into it.
- After the reveal, count trumps. Eight in all. Knowing how many are left tells you when your side-suit winners are safe.
Trumps played before the reveal
On most tables, a trump-suit card thrown before the trump is shown counts as an ordinary card, not a trump. That's why defenders sometimes ask just to make their trump count.
The reveal changes everything
Once the trump is open, the game becomes a counting game: trumps left, Jacks left, who is void in what. If you've been tracking, the last three rounds play themselves.
A reveal that wins the hand
The bidder leads 10♣. Your partner plays the A♣. You have no clubs and hold the 7 of what you suspect is trump. The round already holds 2 points and your partner's Ace might be beaten by the bidder's partner. You ask, the trump is shown (it is your suit), and you cut with the 7: 2 points for your side, and the bidder's plan is exposed.
Guessing the trump as a defender
- The bidder's first lead is rarely the trump suit (they usually can't lead it).
- A suit the bidder avoids following with high cards may be the trump they're saving.
- When the bidder throws a low card instead of cutting, the trump is probably still hidden for a reason.
