Jodi in the 40 Card Game, Explained
Jodi is the 40 card game's high-wire act: the calling team promises to win every single round. Pull it off and you give 3 coolies instead of 1.

When can you call Jodi?
- Only on a 20–29 call (not Honours, not Thani).
- In rounds 1 to 4, while the other team hasn't won a round.
- At your own turn, before you drop your card.
Scoring
Made: give 3 coolies. Broken (the other team wins even one round): take 4.
Asking Jodi
The defending team can turn the tables. At their own turn, a defender may ask the callers "Jodi?". If the callers say No Jodi, the hand ends right there as a normal win for them. If they say Jodi, play continues and the callers must win every round.
How to judge a safe Jodi
Think the way Cheettukali's computer players do:
- Is every card in your hand the top remaining card of its suit, counting what has already fallen?
- Can anyone still cut? Count trumps not yet seen. If an opponent might hold one and is void in a suit you lead, your winner gets cut.
- Can you pull the trumps first? If you hold enough top trumps, lead them before your side suits.
A Jodi that wins about 70% of the time roughly breaks even in coolies. Call it when you are sure, not when you're hopeful.
Example: a safe Jodi
Hearts are trump and revealed. Round 3, your team has won both rounds. All other trumps have fallen except those in your hand. You hold J♥, 3♠ (with J♠ already gone), 9♦ (J♦ and 3♦ gone) and J♣. Every card is the top of its suit and nobody else holds a trump. Call Jodi before you lead.
Example: a risky Jodi
Same hand, but two hearts are still unseen. If an opponent holds one and has no diamonds, your 9♦ gets cut. Lead your J♥ first to pull trumps, or don't call.
When to ask "Jodi?" as a defender
Ask when the callers look certain to win but you think you can take one round, for example when you hold a trump that can cut a suit you're void in. If they answer "No Jodi", you've stopped a possible 3-coolie loss. If they answer "Jodi", they now risk 4 coolies on your one round.
