Thani: The Solo Call in Kerala Card Games
Thani (തനി, "alone") is the boldest call at a Kerala table: one player against everyone, winning every round without help.

In the 40 card game
- Thani is the highest call, above Honours 10.
- The caller plays alone with no trump. Everyone else still plays.
- The hand ends the moment the caller loses a round.
- Made: give 5 coolies. Lost: take a flag.
In 28
Also called Adi at some tables: the bidder promises every round alone. Common scoring is +4 if made, −5 if not.
When is Thani worth it?
Only when every card you hold is unbeatable when you lead it. With no trump in play nobody can cut, so what matters is that each card is the top remaining card of its suit, and that you hold the lead from the first round.
Six cards in 40: J♠ 3♠ J♥ 3♥ J♦ J♣ — strong. But if you don't hold the first lead, an opponent may lead a suit where you can't follow with a winner.
Thani checklist
- Can every card win when led, with no trump?
- Will you get the first lead? If not, can you win whatever is led?
- Is the reward worth a possible flag?
Thanis are rare for a reason. Most hands that look like Thani are better played as Honours.
How Thani changes the table
When Thani is called in 40, the caller's partners stop being partners for that hand: they simply play their cards. The opponents need just one round to break it, so they'll lead the suits where they suspect the caller is weak.
