Rummy has luck in the deal, but most games are decided by a handful of habits. Here are ten that make the difference.

1. Sort and plan before your first draw

Sort by suit, find any pairs and connected cards, count your jokers and decide which suit will be your pure sequence.

2. Build the pure sequence first

Nothing else counts without it. Be flexible about which suit, but do not leave it too late.

3. Discard high single cards early

A lonely King or Queen is worth 10 penalty points and joins nothing. Discard it before a 3 or 4 that may still connect.

4. Keep connected cards, not far-apart pairs

7♠ 8♠ can become a sequence in two ways (6 or 9). 7♠ J♠ needs one exact card.

5. Use jokers where they save the most turns

A joker is best used to complete a set or a sequence that is one card short. Do not use it to hold a group that you could complete with a natural draw next turn.

6. Be careful with the open discard

Take it only when it helps your hand. It also tells opponents what you need.

7. Read the discards

If an opponent keeps picking from the discard pile in one suit, avoid throwing that suit. If a card you need has already been thrown twice, change plans.

8. Do not hold too many "maybe" cards

Every 13-card hand has a handful of cards that may never fit. Throw one every few turns and tighten your groups.

9. Know when to drop

No pure sequence prospects and no jokers at the start often means a drop. See pool rummy drop values.

10. Show as soon as you can

Every extra turn gives opponents a chance to finish first. Once your hand is valid, show.

You can practise all of these on a table that never plays for money. The Auto arrange button is a handy way to see how a computer would group your hand and learn from it.

FAQ

What is the most important rummy tip?

Make a pure sequence early. Without one you cannot show and you lose the maximum penalty.

Should I always pick up from the discard pile?

No. Take it only when it fits a group, because it also tells opponents which cards you need.

How do I get better at rummy?

Play many hands, check what the Auto arrange suggests for your hand and count the points you could have saved.
