Spades Bags Explained
In Spades, winning more tricks than you bid sounds good. It isn't always.

What is a bag?
Each trick your team takes beyond its bid is a bag (or sandbag). It scores 1 point.
The penalty
When a team collects 10 bags, it loses 100 points and the bag count drops by 10.
Example: you bid 5 and take 8: 50 + 3 = 53 points and 3 bags. If you already had 8 bags, you now have 11: −100, and 1 bag carries over.
Managing bags
- Bid accurately rather than low.
- Once your contract is made, duck: play cards that lose.
- Late in the game, if you're near 10 bags, avoid extra tricks even at the cost of a few points.
- But if the other team is close to failing their bid, stopping them beats avoiding bags.
